A view of Varanasi from the rooftop of our hotel at Assi Ghat. This is probably not very representative of the city, as we chose to stay on the southern, less-congested end of town |

In a dense city, there are not many open yards. But roofs in this mild climate function as all-purpose living spaces. The bricks on the corrugated roofing keep it from blowing away in a high wind. |
|
Typical street scene. Note the 'shop' laid out on the pavement to the right. Vehicles and pedestrians are careful to avoid touching the wares. |

A schoolbus rickshaw, which we witnessed fill up with maybe 10 children, pulled by a single strong-legged driver, pedalling the normal one-speed drive train. |
A photo over the head of our driver. Note the load of metal containers on the head of the man at left. |
Day took us to Suneeta Jewlers, at Assi Ghat. The delightful owner Mr. Singh crafted these rings for Lou and Vic, to Lou's design. The helix band is in silver, and the twisted vine and leaves are in gold. He kindly then traveled by train four hours away to Bodh Gaya to personally deliver them to Day, to bring home in time for Christmas. |
