The Kailasanath is considered the pinnacle of Indian rock-carved temple art. In fact, it is one of the Wonders of the ancient world. It is impossible to convey the scope of this work with photographs. It is not a building as such, but an almost unbelievably large, hollow sculptural complex of courtyards, porticoes, pavllions and temples. | |
Every surface is covered with figures from the Indian pantheon and epics. | A representation of Lord Shiva's (God's) temple (that is, the universe), it was carved from the cliff with hammers and chisels by hundreds of monk-artisans over the course of some decades. |
