Scenes from Calcutta

Eden Park Raj

A quiet little park where we spent an entire afternoon escaping the noise and air pollution of Calcutta.

A monument to Queen Victoria --unflatteringly depicted in the foreground bronze -- a legacy of British rule.

street under construction

Typical Calcutta street view. The fellows in the foreground aren't among the sizable population of homeless beggars; thye're just catching some Z's in their wheelbarrow. The flags on strings overhead are from a just-completed holy day.

Typical building construction, encased in a hand-lashed bamboo scaffolding. Workers grip the poles with bare feet. Below, traffic beeps incessantly. Public service spots on TV encourage drivers to practice "Lane Driving", to no avail.

A slum in Calcutta. This is a view of a linear settlement that lines the main road out to the airport. There are miles of lean-to shelters; the road is front yard, workshop, playground, bathroom and kitchen

Selflessly, Day traveled to Calcutta several days early to meet Lou/Bill's flight from London. But trains to Bombay were so booked, we had to languish several days more. Lou/Bill spent the time trying to adjust to Indian ways and dirunal cycle. We both got head colds from the pollution. So we were very ready to be on our trip to the cave temples of Ellora and Ajanta..
