(below) Gabe observes the enigmatic Cadillac Ranch, planted in a roadside field. No sign announces it and no plaque explains it. It has been an icon on Route 66 for over a generation. |
Lou/Bill visited it in the mid-70's when it was brand new, with his Texan friend (and then-fellow architecture student) David Lake. David told the story this way: some art & media students at the University of Texas-Austin talked a farmer into letting them half-bury 10 Cadillacs in his field. The cars would be nose-down, in chronological order by model year from 1951 through 1960, in the statistically most popular nterior and exterior color combinations for each year. The real process occurred a little differently and makes enjoyable reading -- here's a website link for the whole story. The student cadre called themselves Ant Farm and went on to create other 'happenings' and a symbolic building or two. Today the cars stand burned out and covered with elaborate graffitti, the artistic statement of a new generation |
