Glacier Reunion Redux 2007

After the Badlands, we resolved to start our search for the evening's campsite earlier in the afternoon. We chose the area around Custer National Forest especially because to seemed to offer numerous options. However, non-existent signage led to many tense miles and we arrived in a fluster near dark to JimmyJoe campground. That night Day read to us by lantern light, and a moonless crystal clear night sky was lit up by the Milky Way. Next morning revealed what people had been telling us: that this canyon was a very special place. Our site was near a cold clear creek, perfect for washing, and almost loud enough to cover the sound of bagpipe practice.

We arrived at Glacier Park for the Jabo family reunion on Friday 10 Aug. We camped at Apgar, by now our setup and cooking routine smooth and efficient.
Besides the family get-togethers, we toured and walked, found huckleberry specialities, caught an evening Ranger talk, and crept out during the wee hours to lay on the shore of Lake McDonald and watch a spectacular Persid meteor shower.

Don the tour guide told us that the Blackfeet language strongly emphasizes action verbs, very unlike English which is noun-oriented. He said that a proper translation of Pitamakan's name would be "The Running of the Eagle", that is, concerned little with the eagle itself, but rather emphasizing the motion and meaning of the running.

Pitamakan Falls at full flow (above) conceals the 'trick' double flow of the falls at mid-Summer (below).

Before our mad, drive-all-night return trip across the top of the nation (for Gabe's flight home and Bill/Lou/Dad's lecture) we made a stop at the eastern entrance of Glacier Park, to eat huckleberry ice cream cones and visit the stately original lodge at Two Medicine.
