Morning Visitors, 1890 - acrylic

The house we grew up in was built in 1846.  Jan painted it from a photo taken of the house around 1890. A story goes with this painting: Soon after our parents moved into 8447, two elderly ladies knocked on the porch door, asking Mom if they could come in.  It turns out that one of the ladies was born in the house.  As the two women toured the various rooms with Mom, the lady who had been born in the house told Mom that when her mother had been a girl, two Menomonee Indians came up from their camp on the river to that very same porch door asking for something to eat.  As the elderly woman’s mom looked on, her grandmother gave the natives some food. A day or two later, a side of fresh venison was left at the door as a thank you.
